Nainital is known as lake district of Uttarakhand is named after goddess Naina devi.According to the legends, the lake was where the eyes (nain) of the Hindu goddess Sati fell when her distraught husband, Shiva, was carrying her charred body. The temple is open to visitors the whole year round and that is one of the biggest reasons why Nainital is always a busy hill stationThe spot where Sati’s right eye (or Nain) fell, came to be called Nain-tal or lake of the eye. The goddess Shakti is worshiped at the Naina Devi Temple, known by locals as Naini Mata Temple on the north shore of the present day lake.Local people more often call this temple Naini Mata temple. The name Naina Devi can confuse because there is another temple of her in Himachal Pradesh. The goddess blesses all visitors who visit her temple with a pure heart.It is believed that in order to protect the universe from Shiva’s wrath, Lord Vishnu shredded Sati’s body with his chakra. Many believe that Sati’s eyes fell at this spot and thus it has been named as Nainital, wherein ‘nain’ means eyes and ‘tal’ means lake.
